Ursinus Holds Off Late Fords Rally, 8-5
COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Host
Ursinus scored the first six runs of the game en route to a 8-5
Centennial Conference baseball victory over Haverford Friday afternoon
to split the regular season series. Senior outfielder Ben Field
went 3-for-3 at the dish with a walk, one run scored and an RBI
to lead the Fords offense. Haverford falls to 12-9 overall and 3-5
in Centennial play with the loss, while Ursinus improves to 18-7
and 8-2.
Haverford senior pitcher Donny Poster surrendered three runs in
the bottom of the first inning, but held the Bears to no more runs
over the next two frames to keep the score at 3-0 after three innings
of play. The Ursinus offense was able to tack on one more run in
the fourth and two more in the fifth before Haverford answered with
two in the top of the sixth inning. Field and junior Steve Andelman
hit back-to-back RBI doubles to pull the Fords within 6-2. Ursinus
added a run in the bottom of the eighth, making the contest 7-2.
Haverford became patient at the plate in the top of the ninth, as
the first three batters of the inning reached via walk or hit by
pitch. Shortstop Jamie Hollowell drove in senior catcher Kenny McAlpine
on a fielder's choice, and was followed by a two-run single off
the bat of freshman Jake Kaden. Field walked putting Andelman at
bat as the tying run, but a questionable strike three call by the
umpire ended any chance of the Fords being able to complete the
rally.
Freshman first baseman Robbie Crabtree went 2-for-3 on the day while
sophomore outfielder Dean Laganosky added a hit and stole his 24th
base of the season. Poster tossed four and two-thirds innings, allowing
five earned runs while striking out two.
Bears starting pitcher Mike Stangroom earned his third win of the
season, allowing two earned runs while striking out nine Fords in
eight innings of work.
Haverford will host Centennial opponent Washington College for a
12:30 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
