SWARTHMORE, PA - Senior
outfielder Ben Field hit a two-run triple as part of a four-run
third inning, while five pitchers combined to hold host Swarthmore
to one run and three hits as visiting Haverford downed the Garnet
5-1 Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference baseball action.
The Haverford bullpen allowed no hits after the third inning, retiring
the remaining 18 Swarthmore batters in a row over the final six
innings. With the win, Haverford improves to 15-9 overall and 6-5
in Centennial play. Swarthmore falls to 3-20 and 1-12 with the loss.
The Fords broke the game open in the third on Field's two-RBI triple
after freshman infielder Jeff Rickert reached on an error and sophomore
Dean Laganosky walked. Senior outfielder Ben Einbinder drove in
Field with a single. After advancing to third base on a single off
the bat of junior Steve Andelman, Einbinder scored on a sacrifice
fly by freshman Robbie Crabtree to make the score 4-0.
Swarthmore answered with one run in the bottom half of the third,
but Haverford extended its lead back to four runs in the top of
the fifth when Einbinder scored on a fly out to center field by
senior Ryan Stephens, after reaching on an error.
The only Garnet base runner to reach base over the final six frames
reached on an error in the seventh inning, but was retired on the
front end of an inning ending 1-6-3 double play.
Senior pitcher Travis Zier started on the hill for Haverford, allowing
three hits and one earned run while striking out five in three innings
of work. Senior Donny Poster evened his season record to 2-2, tossing
three perfect innings in relief, striking out three. Freshman Ben
Regan-Sachs along with seniors Nat Ballenberg and Nick Stephens
finished Swarthmore off, allowing no hits while striking out two.
Andelman led the Fords with three hits. Einbinder finished 1-for-3
with two runs scored and an RBI at the dish, while junior Will Stafford,
sophomore Jamie Hollowell and Rickert each added one hit a piece
in the win.
The Fords and Garnet will play the second and final game of their
regular season series on Friday at Haverford. Game time is set for
3:30 p.m.
