Haverford Downs Scranton, 10-5;
Hollowell Goes 4-for-5 in Non-Conference Win
HAVERFORD, PA - Sophomore infielder Jamie Hollowell
registered a game-high four hits, drove in two runs and scored two
more to help lift host Haverford past visiting Scranton, 10-5, Thursday
afternoon in non-conference baseball action. Sophomore outfielder
Dean Laganosky stole two more bases, giving him 29 on the season,
tying the program record for steals in a season. Haverford improves
to 20-12 overall on the season with the win, while Scranton falls
to 12-20.
The Fords got on the board first in the bottom of the second when
junior Drew Wilcox blasted his fourth home run of the season over
the right field fence to give Haverford a 1-0 lead. Scranton responded
with two in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Haverford came
back with three runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
senior outfielder Ben Einbinder, a RBI double by senior Ryan Stephens,
and a RBI single from Wilcox. The Royals responded with one in the
top of the sixth, but the Fords came back with two more in the bottom
half on a two-run single up the middle off the bat of junior Steve
Andelman, to make the score 6-3. The Fords put the game out of reach
with a four spot in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run single
up the middle by Hollowell, scoring Jeff Rickert and Robbie Crabtree.
Haverford allowed two runs in the top of the eighth, but senior pitcher
John Castronova came on in relief and pitched a perfect ninth inning
to prevent any sort of Scranton rally.
Einbinder's sacrifice fly is his 43rd run batted in on the season,
and ties him with John Loughnane (1987) and Ryan Stephens (2005) for
the most RBI in a season by a 'Ford. Laganosky tied the program record
for steals in a season, set by Brandon Mills in 2004 and 2005.
Andelman and Wilcox each added three hits and two RBI for Haverford,
while Stafford, Lichtstein, and infielder Larry Minicone each had
two hits. Jeff Suell started the game on the hill for Haverford and
struck out five Royals over 3 1/3 innings pitched in his first appearance
of the season. Sophomore pitcher Jason Miller registered his first
win of the year in relief, allowing one earned run while striking
out three in 2 2/3 innings in relief. Senior Jon Burke and freshman
Chase Kennedy also threw well in relief to lead the Fords to the 10-5
win.
Haverford will host Johns Hopkins on Saturday in a critical Centennial
Conference doubleheader. The Fords must sweep the Blue Jays to have
a chance at making the 2007 CC baseball postseason.
