Haverford Rallies Past New Jersey City University, 10-7
FORT MYERS, FL - Haverford rallied from a 6-2
deficit to defeat New Jersey City University 10-7 in baseball action
Tuesday evening. Senior shortstop Ben Einbinder continued his hot
hitting going 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and
two runs batted in. Sophomore outfielder Dean Laganosky was unstoppable
on the base paths, swiping four bags for the Fords in the game.
Haverford (5-1 overall) extended its winning streak to five games
with tonight's victory.
New Jersey City opened the scoring, plating four runs in the top
of the third inning. Haverford scored its first run in the bottom
of the third inning and added another in the fourth when junior
Steve Andelman started the inning with a leadoff single and was
driven in on one of Einbinder's two doubles on the day to make the
score 4-2. The Gothic Knights answered with two runs of their own
in the top of the fifth inning, increasing their lead back to four
runs at 6-2. The Fords answered with three runs in the bottom of
the fifth and four more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-6
advantage. Haverford gave up one more run, but scored another in
the bottom of the eighth en route to the 10-7 win.
Senior pitcher Jon Berke picked up the win in relief for the Fords.
Berke tossed 3 1/3 innings giving up one run on two hits. Sophomore
Jason Miller started the game on the hill for the Fords and went
3 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits. Senior pitcher
Nick Stephens worked 1 1/3 innings in relief, while senior John
Castronova tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save
in as many days.
Senior catcher Kenny McAlpine collected three hits with two runs
scored and a run batted in, while senior outfielder Ben Field belted
two doubles, drove in a run and scored three runs.
The Fords, who have started the season with a 5-1 record for the
fourth straight season, will look for their sixth straight victory
when they take on Albion in Fort Myers on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
