Muhlenberg Tops Haverford, 6-5 in Centennial Opener
ALLENTOWN, PA - Visiting Haverford College fell
to host Muhlenberg, 6-5 in the Centennial Conference season opener
for both squads. Junior Drew Wilcox collected a game-high three hits
including a double, a stolen base, one run scored and an RBI. The
Fords fall to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in Centennial play with the loss,
while the Mules improve to 4-9 and 1-0 on the season.
The Fords put up three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore
outfielder Dean Laganosky started the game with a single up the middle.
Laganosky swiped second and advanced to third base after a single
by freshman second baseman Jake Kaden. Senior catcher Kenny McAlpine
hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Laganosky for the
game's first run. Kaden advanced to third base on an error by the
shortstop and scored after senior Ryan Stephens hit a sacrifice fly
to right field. Wilcox followed with a single to score senior shortstop
Ben Einbinder, who reached base with a walk and stole second, for
the Fords third run.
The game remained at 3-0 until the Mules put up a three-spot of their
own in the bottom of the third inning. The Fords answered with a run
in the top of the fourth when freshman Jeff Rickert drove in Wilcox,
who led off the inning with a base hit, to make the score 4-3. Muhlenberg
tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one more in the
bottom of the eighth to take a 6-4 lead into the top of the ninth
inning. McAlpine hit a one out double to left center and was driven
in by Stephens, who singled to left field. Haverford couldn't get
the tying run to cross the plate, as the next Fords batter flied out
to right field to end the game.
Haverford senior pitcher Travis Zier started the game on the hill,
tossing 5 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out
two. Senior pitcher Jon Berke went the rest of the way, pitching 2
1/3 innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run in relief. Stephens
finished 2-for-4 for Haverford at the plate with two runs batted in
and a run scored. Laganosky went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two
more stolen bases in the game. Laganosky has 14 stolen bases through
