WESTMINSTER, MD - Visiting Haverford College split
a pair of Centennial Conference baseball games with McDaniel Saturday
afternoon in Westminster. The Fords took game one, 5-2, but fell on
the losing side of a 6-5 decision in game two. Haverford senior third
baseman Ryan Stephens drove in three runs in the double-dip to pace
the Fords offense, while senior pitcher John Castronova took the decision
in both games on the mound in relief.
Haverford scored one run in the top of the fifth and sixth innings
to take a 2-0 lead over McDaniel in game one, but the Green Terror
rallied with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth
to knot the game at two. The Fords plated three runs in the top of
the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of
senior Ben Field. The three run cushion was plenty for Castronova
to work with, as he retired the Green Terror one-two-three in the
bottom of the seventh to pick up the win in relief.
Senior pitcher Travis Zier started game one on the mound, striking
our four McDaniel batters while allowing two earned runs and six hits.
Field and sophomore outfielder Dean Laganosky each finished 2-for-4
at the plate in game one, while Laganosky stole two more bases in
the game to push his season total to 19. Sophomore infielder Jamie
Hollowell pinch hit in the seventh and started the Haverford rally
with a single and eventually came around to score the game-winning
run.
McDaniel took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third in game two, but
Haverford responded with two runs in the top of the fourth on RBI
singles by juniors Drew Wilcox and Will Stafford. McDaniel rallied
with three more runs, taking a 4-2 advantage into the top of the eighth
inning. Haverford answered with a three spot in the top of the eighth
off a two-RBI double by senior third baseman Ryan Stephens and a RBI
single off the bat off junior Steve Andelman, giving Haverford a 5-4
lead going into the ninth inning. The Green Terror led off the bottom
of the ninth with a double, followed by a triple to knot the game
at five. McDaniel scored the game-winning run on a Haverford error
to take game two.
Senior outfielder Ben Einbinder was the only Ford to register two
hits in game two, while senior catcher Kenny McAlpine and freshman
second baseman Jake Kaden each had two stolen bases in the game.
Haverford (11-5 overall, 2-2 Centennial) will travel to Centennial
opponent Franklin & Marshall Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
