Haverford Takes Two From Lakeland;
Zier, Lewis Carry Fords to Doubleheader Sweep
FORT MYERS, FL – Haverford
pitchers Travis Zier and Adam Lewis allowed only three earned runs
in a combined 12 2/3 innings pitched to lead the Fords to a doubleheader
sweep of Lakeland Sunday night. Haverford took game one by a 5-2
score and followed that win with an 8-1 victory. The Fords improve
to 2-1 on the season with the victories.
Zier started game one for the Fords and allowed two
earned runs and seven scattered hits over 6 2/3 innings to help
give Haverford its first victory of the season. Down 2-0 entering
the top of the fifth inning, Haverford plated two runs. Senior shortstop
Ben Einbinder then stole third base and scored the go ahead run
on a throwing error by the Lakeland catcher to give the Fords a
3-2 advantage. Drew Wilcox gave the Fords some insurance runs in
the top of the seventh inning with a two RBI triple. Other Haverford
standouts in game one included senior outfielder Ben Field’s
3-for-3 performance at the plate along with two runs scored and
two stolen bases. Junior Steve Andelman and freshman Jeff Rickert
also collected two hits each in the Fords game one victory.
Adam Lewis pitched six stellar innings in his collegiate
debut in game two, allowing only three hits and one earned run with
four strikeouts. Lewis’ dominate pitching along with a hot
Haverford offense lifted the Fords past Lakeland, 8-1, in game two.
Haverford scored three runs in the first and third innings, and
tacked on two more in the fourth. Senior catcher Kenny McAlpine
went 2-for-4 in game two with a double and two runs scored. Einbinder
went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI to help
pace the Haverford offense. Sophomore Joe Huttner closed the door
