Haverford Splits Sunday Doubleheader With Gettysburg
GETTYSBURG, PA - Visiting Haverford took the first
game of a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader, 4-3 from host
Gettysburg, but allowed 11 runs in the final four innings as the Bullets
rallied to take game two from the Fords, 18-15. Haverford is now 18-11
overall and 9-7 in Centennial play and must win its two remaining
Centennial contests against 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Saturday
to have a shot at making the CC playoffs. Gettysburg moves its record
to 22-7 and 11-5 with the split.
Haverford rallied from a 2-0 deficit in game one with two runs in
the sixth inning and one run in the seventh and eighth innings en
route to the 4-3 game one win in eight innings. Junior outfielder
Steve Andelman lined a two-run single to knot the game at two in the
sixth inning, driving in senior Ben Field and sophomore Dean Laganosky.
Junior Drew Wilcox reached on an error in the seventh with one out,
with pinch runner Chris Dooley scoring on a RBI double off the bat
of freshman Jake Kaden to give the Fords a 3-2 advantage. However,
Gettysburg knotted the game at three in the bottom of the seventh
inning, extending the scheduled seven inning game into extra innings.
Sophomore Jamie Hollowell reached base with a single and advanced
to second on a throwing error by the Bullets defense. Senior outfielder
Ben Einbinder singled in Hollowell, as senior pitcher John Castronova
held Gettysburg in check in the bottom of the eighth to give the Fords
the 4-3 win.
Game two saw the Fords jump out to a 9-0 lead after three innings
of play, including six runs in the first inning which saw the first
seven Haverford batters successfully reach base. The Bullets responded
with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 9-7, but
the Fords got five of those runs back in the top of the fifth, highlighted
by a two-run home run off the bat of Einbinder, giving Haverford a
14-7 lead after five innings of play. However, Gettysburg rallied
with three runs in the sixth, six runs in the seventh and two runs
in the eighth en route to the 18-15 game two victory.
Einbinder finished game two 3-for-6 at the dish with five runs batted
in and two runs scored, while Laganosky also finished with three hits,
two runs scored and a RBI. Field, Andelman, senior third baseman Ryan
Stephens and freshman first baseman Robbie Crabtree each added two
hits in the loss.
Haverford will host non-conference opponent Rowan on Tuesday at 3:30
p.m., and will play two additional non-conference games this week
before hosting 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in
a Centennial doubleheader.
