Five-Run Third Pushes Franklin & Marshall Past Haverford, 7-2
HAVERFORD, PA - Visiting Franklin & Marshall
used a five-run third inning en route to a 7-2 victory to complete
a regular season sweep over host Haverford on a cool and breezy
Friday afternoon in Centennial Conference baseball action. The Fords
fall to 11-7 overall and 2-4 in Centennial play with the loss, while
the Diplomats improved to 11-8 and 5-1.
The Fords jumped out to a early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore
outfielder Dead Laganosky walked and stole his 20th bag of the season
to advance to second base. Laganosky advanced to third on a ground
out and scored when senior outfielder Ben Field grounded out to
second base. Senior catcher Kenny McAlpine lined a one out single
down the left field line in the second inning, and was driven in
by junior Steve Andelman's double to left center field to give Haverford
a 2-0 edge after two innings of play.
F&M responded with five runs in the top of the third, highlighted
by a three run home run by Jeff Rowand to give the Diplomats a 5-2
lead. F&M scored two more runs in the seventh, as starting pitcher
Matt Metsch quieted the Fords offense over his final five innings
of work, allowing no runs over that span, to earn his fourth victory
of the season. Haverford starting pitcher Travis Zier (1-3) took
the loss for Haverford, tossing 6 2/3 innings on the hill allowing
seven earned runs while striking out five.
Andelman registered two of the Fords seven hits on the day. McAlpine,
along with seniors Ben Einbinder, Ryan Stephens, sophomore Jamie
Hollowell and freshman Jake Kaden accounted for the rest of Haverford's
seven hits. Senior pitcher John Castronova pitched a scoreless ninth
inning of relief for the Fords to lower his season earned run average
to 0.68.
Haverford will travel to Gettysburg Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. Centennial
doubleheader.
