FORT MYERS, FL - The Haverford baseball team
split a doubleheader with Benedictine on Friday evening underneath
a stormy Fort Myers, Florida sky. The Fords six-game winning streak
came to an end in game one, as the squad fell on the losing side
of a 6-3 score. Haverford bounced back with a 14-7 victory over
the Eagles in the second game of the night. The Fords now stand
at 7-2 overall on the season.
In game one, Haverford took an early 2-1 lead after one inning of
play before rain interrupted the contest for over an hour. The Fords
weren't able to keep their offensive momentum over the final six
innings and lost game one, 6-3.
Freshman Ben Regan-Sachs took the ball in the first game and allowed
three earned runs over 5 1/3 innings pitched. Senior catcher Kenny
McAlpine went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double. Outfielders
Ben Field and Dean Laganosky also went 1-for-3 in the game. Field
contributed an RBI single while Laganosky registered two more stolen
bases in the losing effort.
Haverford's bats came alive in game two. Senior third baseman Ryan
Stephens opened the flood gates in the third inning with a grand
slam. Senior shortstop Ben Einbinder followed with his third home
run of the season, a three-run shot, in the fourth inning. Haverford
senior Donny Poster started the game on the mound and allowed one
earned run while striking out four over three innings of work. Seniors
Nick Stephens, Justin Marlowe, Nat Ballenberg and sophomore Joe
Huttner held Benedictine in check over the final four innings to
help lead the Fords to the 14-7 win.
Einbinder finished game two 2-for-4 at the plate with five runs
batted, two runs scored and a double in addition to his three-run
bomb. Field added three hits with a double, two runs batted in and
two runs scored while sophomore outfielder Chris Dooley finished
the game 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Haverford will finish its Florida trip with a 10:00 a.m. game on
Saturday versus Plymouth State.
