- Thomas Glasser '82 Hall of Achievement
The purpose of the Thomas Glasser ’82 Hall of Achievement is to recognize former athletes who have made significant contributions to the success of Haverford College athletics. Through their outstanding achievements in one or more varsity sports, these athletes helped to define excellence for and bring distinction to Haverford College and its athletic program. The Hall of Achievement was created in memory of Thomas Glasser ’82 in recognition of his generosity and love for Haverford College.
It is fitting that the college’s Hall of Achievement is dedicated in Tom Glasser’s memory, as he embodied the qualities necessary for inclusion in this select company. Haverford’s Varsity Cup winner as the outstanding athlete in the Class of 1982 and a gold medal winner in the 4x400-meter relay at the 1981 Maccabiah Games in Israel, Glasser was “a great competitor, with a great positive attitude,” according to his coach, Tom Donnelly. “He was the best all-around track and field athlete in my years here: sprinting, jumping, middle distances…he even ran cross country.” Glasser won the Ernest F. Walton 1890 Cup as the top male track athlete in both his junior and senior seasons, and was the team’s captain as a senior. He competed on several recordsetting relays, and set many individual records, including an indoor 600-yard time (1:12.8) that still stands a quarter-century later. He held college indoor imperial-distance records in the 300, 440 and 880 runs and the high jump (6’ 4 1/4“), and outdoors, he once held the 400-meter dash (48.1) and high jump (6’ 7 1/2”) marks. His 1:51.1 best in the 800 meters rates among the top all-time performances in Haverford history.
