Entering her seventh year as head coach, Amy Bergin has stamped her team as a top Centennial Conference mainstay. She has directed the program to six consecutive conference tournament appearances, and led Haverford to its second consecutive Centennial Championship in 2007. Under Bergin, the Fords have made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007.
The 2007 campaign marked the most successful season in program history. The Fords set a school record with 31 wins and hosted the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional where they advanced to the final before falling to national semifinalist Juniata College. Under Bergin’s watch the Fords were ranked No. 11 in the CSTV/AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll for four consecutive weeks. Haverford’s success earned Bergin the American Coaches Volleyball Association (AVCA) Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year award.
During Coach Bergin’s tenure, the team has progressed every season, rewriting the record books with each new accomplishment. In 2004, Haverford posted its first conference playoff win. The previous season Bergin’s squad claimed the prestigious Seven Sisters Tournament championship. In her first season at the helm in 2002, the Fords defeated Gettysburg for the first time in program history.
Coach Bergin has produced 14 All-Conference athletes, one conference player of the year, six Mid-Atlantic All-Region players, two AVCA All-Americans, one AVCA National Player of the Week and one NCAA record holder for career total attempts. She also has had two Academic All-District athletes. The program boasts having only the second, four-time First Team All-Centennial Conference player in conference history.
Prior to coming to Haverford, Coach Bergin was an assistant coach at Marietta (Ohio) College for the volleyball and softball programs while earning an M.A. in education. She earned her undergraduate degree in Sports Management from Bethany College (W.Va.), graduating cum laude in 1999. As a volleyball and softball player at Bethany, she was recognized as the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete and Outstanding Scholar-Athlete. Her performance is well documented in Bethany's record books.
A member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Bergin resides in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania with husband, Matt, and daughters Suzie and Megan.
Bergin is assisted by Shannan Smith who is in her second season with the program. Also assisting Bergin are first-year coaches Dave Noll and Dana Mullenhard.
