HAVERFORD, PA - Host Haverford split two games
with visiting non-conference opponent Rowan Thursday afternoon
in softball action. Haverford fell in game one, 4-3, but came
back with a 3-2 win over the Profs in game two. Sophomore first
baseman Natalie Richman contributed four hits on the afternoon
while junior second baseman Allison Frank had three hits, including
a two-run home run in game one, to help pace the Fords offense.
Haverford now stands at 10-6 overall on the season while Rowan
goes to 12-6.
Sophomore outfielder Dana Irshay worked a
walk with one out in the bottom of the first inning of game one.
Frank followed with a two-run home run deep over the fence in
left field to give Haverford an early 2-0 lead. The game remained
at 2-0 until the Profs scored two runs in the top of the fourth
inning. Haverford answered with a run of its own in the bottom
half of the fourth. Junior third baseman started the Fords two
out rally in the fourth with a single. Zavadsky walked, putting
runners on first and second. Sophomore Becky Garibotto drove in
the Fords third run of the game with a single before Haverford
was finally retired. Rowan scored the game-winning runs in the
top of the fifth on a two-run home run off the bat of Kristin
Wallace. Haverford was only able to register one hit in its final
three innings at the plate.
The Fords plated the first run of game two in the bottom half
of the first inning. Frank and Richman each collected singles
with two outs. Sullivan hit a routine ground ball to the Rowan
second baseman, but an error allowed Frank to score to give Haverford
the early 1-0 edge. The Fords plated another run in the bottom
of the third when Garibotto drilled a double to center field,
driving in Richman. Rowan evened the contest at two in the fourth
inning off three hits. With the game still knotted at two, Irshay
led off the fifth inning with a walk and Frank followed with a
bunt single. Richman was able to drive in Irshay, in what would
be the game-winning run, with a single down the left field line.
Richman finished game two a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with
a run scored and a RBI. Fontinell was 2-for-2 with a walk in the
second game while Frank finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Sophomore pitcher Sam Fontinell closed out the game to earn her
first save of the season. Garibotto picked up the win in the circle,
going five innings allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
The game two win marks the first time Haverford has ever defeated
Rowan in program history. Rowan had beaten Haverford in five straight
meetings until the Fords 3-2 triumph.
Haverford will open up Centennial play on Saturday with a doubleheader
at Dickinson starting at 1:00 p.m.
