Men’s Fencing 2008-2009 Outlook
The Black Squirrel fencers lost only one starter to graduation in 2008, and for the 2008-09 season they have gained an impressive crop of recruits.
Highlights of the 2007-08 season included 15 qualifiers to the NCAA Regional Championships, and one qualifier to the NCAA National Championships.
As the men’s fencing team gathers its forces for another run at the MACFA title, a potent mix of savvy veterans including Colin Cross, Jared Forbus, and Max Rosen-Long, is strengthened by the addition of freshmen phenoms Andrew Bostick and Aaron Ruby. They will be joined by sophomore Rémy Olson, who last year finished 18th at the NCAA Championships. Also expected to contribute mightily are Brian Wexler in foil and Adam Zakheim in sabre.
Women’s Fencing 2008-2009 Outlook
Highlights of the 2007-08 season included the team’s best ever performance at the NIWFA Championships, taking the award for top NCAA Division III team, finishing second overall.
Co-captain Halli Melnitsky ’08 set a record with 56 wins and 8 losses on the season, and finished fourth at the NCAA Regional Championships.
With the loss of Melnitsky, the Fords will be led by epeeist Emma Buckingham, 15th at the 2008 NCAA National Championships, and the rest of the very strong epee squad: co-captains Vanessa Pena and Melanie Preston, and sophomore Jill Geratowski. Young foil and sabre squads, led by sophomores Amanda Levinson and Kelsey Cantwell, have the opportunity to help solidify their position at the top of the DIII ranks.
