HAVERFORD, PA– Fifth-seeded Wellesley
was led by Courtney Richter's game-high 19 points and Jessica Duff's
18 points and game-high 18 rebounds to hold off eighth-seeded Bryn
Mawr, 55-54, Saturday morning in Seven Sisters Tournament women's
basketball action. Wellesley improves to 1-5 on the season with
the win, while Bryn Mawr falls to 1-5 overall.
Bryn Mawr was down as much as 26-15 late
in the first half, however, the Owls rallied back to within five
at 26-21 after junior guard Katie Driscoll nailed two three-pointers
on consecutive trips on the offensive end.
The first half ended with the Blue leading, 28-21. At the break,
Wellesley scored 18 of its points in the paint to Bryn Mawr's six.
The Blue also held the Owls to 29.2% shooting in the half. Bryn
Mawr's struggles from the first tournament game at the free throw
line, as the Owls shot 4-18 (22.2%) from the charity stripe in the
first half.
The Owls started the second half on fire, starting the period on
a 10-2 run on four-of-six shooting from the floor and forcing two
early turnovers to eliminate its deficit, taking its first lead
of the game, 32-30, 2:47 into the half. Driscoll drained her third
three of the contest to give the Owls a five point, 39-34 edge,
with 13:30 remaining in the game. Wellesley slowly inched its way
back from the small deficit, and took the lead back with 7:57 remaining
at 46-45. Wellesley sophomore Courtney Richter his a three-pointer
from the top of the key to push the Blue ahead, 51-47 with 6:00
to go. The Owls pulled within two at 55-53 with 1:13 remaining after
a lay up by sophomore Katie Kent. Wellesley brought the ball up
the court and called a time out. Following the time out, Bryn Mawr
forced a jump ball and regained posession with 47.0 seconds to go.
Owls senior Amy Johnson drove the lane and was fouled on a lay up
attempt. Johnson hit one of two free throws to pull the Owls within
55-54. Wellesley guard Kate Martone missed a jump shot on the Blue's
next possession, and the rebound was grabbed by the Owls, however,
Johnson missed a 12-footer and the ball went out of bounds untouched.
Wellesley was able to inbound the ball and dribble down the floor,
avoiding being fouled, to hold on for the 55-54 win.
Bryn Mawr shot six-of-nine from beyond the arc in the game, but
only made 33.3% of its free throw attempts (8-24). The Owls were
led by Katie Driscoll's 14 points and Johnson's 13 points and nine
rebounds.
Wellesley will play the winner of the Haverford/St. Joseph (CT)
game in the tournament's fifth-place game on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.,
while Bryn Mawr will play the loser of that contest in the seventh-place
game Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
