Smith Holds Off Haverford, 49-47

HAVERFORD, PA Smith forward Helena Charron hit a game-winning jump shot with 3.1 seconds remaining to upend Seven Sisters Tournament host Haverford College, 49-47, Friday evening in opening round action. Smith improves to 1-4 overall on the season while Haverford falls to 0-3.

Smith was up as many as seven points at 23-17 with 18:35 left in the contest. The Fords went on a 14-2 run to eliminate the deficit and to take a six point lead of their own at 31-25. Smith battled its way back and held a 43-39 lead with 2:30 remaining. After Haverford freshman Sara Cram hit a jump shot, the Fords defense forced a turnover and tied the game at 43 after junior forward Leah Fiasca posted up and made a layup. With 39.5 seconds remaining, Smith senior Helena Carron drove the lane and made a lay up to give the Pioneers a 47-45 advantage. Haverford sophomore forward Brittany Lattisaw made a post move of her own and laid the ball in as she was fouled with 19.1 seconds remaining. Lattisaw missed the free throw, and Cram followed with an offensive rebound but missed the put back. Smith grabbed the rebound off Cram's missed shot. After Smith called a timeout, Charron took an inbounds pass from under the basket and banked in an eight-footer off the glass to give the Pioneers a 49-47 lead with 3.1 seconds to go, which was not enough time for the Fords to drive the floor and attempt a shot.

The Pioneers were led by Berit Schelde's game-high of 19 points along with 12 rebounds. Charron also collected a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Courtney Parker brought down a game-high 15 rebounds. Lattisaw led Haverford with 14 points, while senior guard Abby Scattergood had seven points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.

Smith out rebounded Haverford by a 56-29 margin, and the Fords defense forced 28 turnovers to their own 13.

Smith will play the winner of the Swarthmore/St. Joseph (CT) game Saturday at 4:00 p.m., while the Fords will play the loser of that contest Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
