Haeuser & Cerlen Pace Vassar's 53-41 Win Over Smith
HAVERFORD, PA – Vassar
College held a five point lead at the half and never gave it up
en route to a 53-41 victory over Smith College in the third place
game of the 2006 Women's Basketball Seven Sisters Tournament. Vassar
improved to 3-4 overall with the win while Smith falls to 1-6.
Vassar was led by freshman forward Emily Haeuser's game-high 18
points and 13 rebounds. Senior center Rachel Cerlen contributed
14 points and 11 rebounds in the Vassar win. Cerlen shot six-of-14
from the field, while Haeuser was seven-of-15 in the game.
Smith got a game-high 17 points from freshman guard Lisa Marie Vuono
on six-of-eight shooting. Sophomore guard Rosie Baldwin led Smith
in rebounding, collecting six boards in the contest.
The Pioneers shot 32.8% in the game while Vassar shot 31.5%. Smith
turned the ball over 18 times to Vassar's 15, but was out rebounded
by a 46-34 margin.
Smith defeated tournament host Haverford, 49-47, on Friday evening,
but was defeated by Swarthmore, 51-45, in overtime, on Saturday
evening. Vassar bested Wellesley, 55-38 on Friday and lost to Mount
Holyoke, 66-47, on Saturday.
