History
In November 1980, Barnard College hosted Bryn Mawr College, College
of New Rochelle and Vassar College in a four-team basketball tournament,
which was won by New Rochelle. Following the tournament, the original
Seven Sister schools - Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Radcliffe,
Smith, Vassar and Wellesley - joined to conduct championships in
sports they had in common.
Radcliffe (now competing as Harvard) decided not to participate
in favor of NCAA Division I and Ivy League competition. Barnard
(now competing as Columbia) participated in a few early championships,
but withdrew from the competition for the same reasons. The five
remaining sisters were joined by their Division III "cousins,"
Haverford and Swarthmore, who made long-term commitments to participate
in the championships.
In addition to the basketball tournament, Seven Sisters championships
are conducted in the sports of crew, cross country, field hockey,
lacrosse, squash, swimming & diving, tennis, and volleyball.
St. Joseph College of Connecticut completed the eight team draw
of the 2006 Seven Sisters women's basketball tournament. Mount Holyoke
defeated Swarthmore for the fourth consecutive season, 71-50, to
take home its fifth consecutive Seven Sisters crown. The 2006 Seven
Sisters women's basketball tournament was held from December 1-3,
2006, on the campus of Haverford College.
