Red Oak

#21 - Red Oak (Quercus rubra)

The Red Oak is an excellent tree for the home landscape because it transplants well and is tolerant of pollution. The fat acorns with saucer-like caps and the bristle-tipped leaves with pointed lobes make the Red Oak easy to identify. The girth of this particular tree gives a tantalizing hint of its age. The tree is considered the oldest on campus, and, at 100 feet tall, is a Pennsylvania State Champion, the largest in the state.
