One of the showiest magnolias, the Southern Magnolia can grow up to 80 feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide with white, waxy flowers up to a foot across. The cone-like fruits that follow split open in fall to reveal flame-red seeds. The tree is marginally hardy in our area, but the cultivar 'Edith Bogue' does well if planted in a protected area. The large, dark green leaves with their fuzzy brown undersides remain on the tree year-round.
