Leadership: Events, Classes, and Conferences
FALL 2008 Foundational Component Offerings
This semester, you may work to complete the Foundational Components of the Rufus M. Jones Institute for Leadership in the following ways:
- Speakers, Discussions, and Workshops on Leadership
- Attend at least five (5) Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) Workshops. Workshops take place on Wednesdays from 5:30 pm - 7 pm in the Bryn Mawr Room of the Dining Center. For more information, please email Jeffery Tecosky-Feldman (jtecosky@haverford.edu).
- Commission on Voluntary Service and Action (CSV), September 25, CPGC Café. Susan Angus, executive director of this consultative and coordinating body of more than 200 non-governmental, voluntary service organizations based in North America that support or place volunteers with projects and programs serving people in the US and internationally, will present what she and her organization have learned about community organizing and about putting together good volunteer experiences. Angus will bring with her representatives from one of CSV's member organizations. Visit the CPGC website for more information.
- David Werthmeimer/Gates Foundation, November 6, CPGC Café. Homelessness, global philanthropy, and potential internship with Gates Foundation. Visit the CPGC website for more information.
- "Deep Dialogue and Global Spirituality", November TBA, location TBA. A presentation by Ashok Gangadean, Professor of Philosophy. More details to come. For more information email leadership@haverford.edu.
- Conferences
a. "Civic Leadership: Preparing Students Beyond Campus." On Saturday, November 8th, Widener University is hosting its 6th Annual Student Leadership Conference. Four Haverford students will have the opportunity to attend this conference for FREE. If you're interested, simply email Jason McGraw and make a firm commitment that you will be able to attend. Participants will leave from Haverford at 8:00am and return by 5:00pm that day. - Retreats
a. SAGA Safe Zone Retreat, December 9, 6-9pm, Whitehead Campus Center 313. Safezone Training gives trainees an overview of background and terms to use while describing queer issues. Trainees also learn how to counsel their peers through issues of sexual and gender orientation. For more information contact Rachel Cholst at rcholst@haverford.edu.

- Exploring Leadership: Linking Theory to Practice
If juxtaposing leadership development theories, understanding the role of self development, and learning with people who have a wide-range of experiences and perspectives is enticing to you, then this is the ex-co course you'll want to take. In the most basic form, we'll explore the answers to the following two questions: 1) What is leadership? and 2) How do we "do" leadership? The non-credit course will be held on Tuesday nights from 7:30pm - 8:30pm. The discussion will be lead by Jason McGraw, and topics will include:
Week 1: Welcome, intro to course, and exploring various successful business models (Google, Ben & Jerry's, Southwest Airlines, Elon College, and Starbucks).
Week 2: Discovering, Understanding, and Utilizing Your Strengths
Week 3: Leadership Theories
Week 4: Organizational Conflict Resolution
Week 5: Negotiation, Facilitation, and Interpersonal Communication
Week 6: The Presidency: Not Just 'Positional Power'
The class will meet from 7:30pm - 8:30pm on: 10/7, 10/21, 10/28, 11/11, 11/18, 11/25.

An Evening With Dr. Christopher B. Howard, Wednesday, February 18, 2009, Sharpless Auditorium 7:30 PM. Dr. Howard is a Distinguished Graduate of the US Airforce Academy, Rhodes Scholar, and is the Chairman and Founder of the Impact Young Lives Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that provides scholarship and trvel opportunities for South African students of color. - Global Philosophy Annual Forum, Saturday, April 4, 2009, Sharpless Auditorium 1PM-6PM. Presented by the Global Dialogue Institute, three hour long keynote presentations will be made, followed by an extended dialogue with the audience.
Keynote Presentations:
"Awakening the Global Mind: Our Evolutionary MindShift" with Ashok Gangadean, Professor and Chair of Philosophy, Haverford College; Founder and Director of The Global Dialogue Institute; Chair/Coordinator of the 2009 Global Philosophy Forum.
"Reading the landscape: Summoning the Unified Field," an investigation into the relation between origin of alphabet, pattern in nature and the neurology of perception; with Gilah Yelin Hirsch, Professor of Art, California State University; painter, writer, photographer, videographer.
"Crossing the Event Horizon: Rise to the Equation - From Coniousness to Physics," weaving together the sciences of advanced physics, biology, chemistry and cosmology, as well as the wisdom of the ancients; with Nassim Haramein, Theoretical scientist and Director of The Resonance Project. - By Way of Pilgrimage: A Spiritual Leadership Journey, Monday, April 27th, 6:30-8:30, CPGC Cafe. Alexandra and William Riggins have been on a pilgrimage for the last twelve years. Traveling mostly by bicycle, and carrying a guitar and tent, they have visited holy places in forty-three countries and have bicycled almost 27,000 miles. Let us explore this idea of cross-culture pilgrimage and how it pertains to social justice, philosophy, religion, and leadership; what these two troubadours have seen and learned; and listen to their music.

- Retreats
- Leadership and Spirituality Retreat, January 31-February 1. An overnight retreat at Pendle Hill facilitated by Margaret Benefiel, Quaker leadership consultant. Participants will engage in a weekend-long discussion about alternative leadership methods, including the importance of appreciation, being your best self, and mediation.

11am-12pm - Rufus Jones Documentary screening in Hilles 109. Followed by a discussion with QuaC (Haverford's Quaker student group).
12:30pm-1:30pm - GIANT, campus-wide game of TWISTER craziness on Founders Green. All are invited to participate in this community-building event.
1:30pm-3:00pm - Panel of distinguished Haverford alumni (Hilles 109): Juan Williams '76 is an NPR, Washington Post, and Fox News journalist, as well as an Emmy Award winner.David Wertheimer '77 is a Senior Program Officer at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and has worked in the non-profit and philanthropy world for almost two decades. Bruce Agins '75 is the medical director of New York City's AIDS Institute and oversees quality of HIV care in NY state and nationally.He has also begun to work internationally with several countries to help them develop quality of HIV care programs (in Mozambique, Guyana, Namibia, Uganda, to name a few). - Outdoors Ropes Course, Saturday, April 18. Through a set of physical challenges, a half day retreat at the Westtown School's Ropes Course will give participants a new outlook on the inner workings of leadership, independence, and cooperation.
