2007/2008 Academic Year

DORMNET registration Deadline -- September 5, noon

Register in your dorm room before noon on September 5. If you do not register by that date, you will be returned to the isolated network.

Alert: Microsoft Office 2007 and compatibility issues

Earlier this year Microsoft released a new version of Office for Windows computers, Office 2007. This version of Office is available on some computers in our public labs. Many students and some faculty also have Office 2007.

While the new version of Office offers many desirable features, it also brings significant compatibility issues. Files saved in the new Office 2007 default formats cannot be opened by older versions of Microsoft Office, unless you take the steps outlined on the web at http://www.haverford.edu/acc/docs/software/msoffice/office2007compatibility.html.

Update your software programs

By keeping software current, you will help to secure your system and allow ACC to better support your computer. You must update your virus protection software, your operating system, and your Microsoft Office software as part of the process to get off of the isolated network. However, you should update additional software as well.

Go to the Software Download page and get current versions of software. Eudora, Firefox, Netscape, Acrobat Reader, Flash Player, QuickTime, VPN, and Keyserver have all been updated since last fall.

Clean up your SquirrelMail mail spool

Are you having trouble logging into SquirrelMail or finding it just too slow? If so, it is time to clean up your SquirrelMail account.

If you have trouble opening SquirrelMail, download old mail messages to Eudora. First Install and Configure Eudora. Then follow the instructions in Managing Your Haverford Email From Multiple Computer Systems; download your email to Eudora, but leave 5 days worth of mail on the server.

Once you are able to access SquirrelMail, organize wanted mail into folders. Too many messages in your inbox will clog up your mail system and cause the login or sluggish problems you are experiencing. Mail organized into other folders will not cause this problem. However, beware that all message in SquirrelMail will still count toward your quota.

Microsoft Vista now supported by ACC

ACC now supports Microsoft's new Vista operating system. Several Vista-based computers are available in our computing labs. We recommend the Vista operating system for those buying new Windows computers.

New Help Desk manager/New Help Desk hours

The Help Desk opens this academic year under a new manager, Jennifer Scales. Before coming to Haverford, Jennifer Scales was a help desk manager at Temple University. She brings lots of experience, enthusiasm, and new ideas for improving our desktop computer support. We are excited to have her on staff.

In addition to a new manager, the Help Desk has new hours.

  • Monday: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
  • Tuesday to Friday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Public computing labs open 24/7 starting September 3

ACC computing labs in Roberts 9, HCA 30, and KINSC H204 will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, starting September 3. For more information about these and other computing labs, see Computing Labs and Locations.

New hardware and software in the labs

We have updated the computing labs with new equipment and software. We have a number of new Dell machine running Vista, as well as new Macintoshes with OS X 10.4. You will also find the following new software versions: Microsoft Office 2007 (on Vista computers), Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, Adobe Contribute CS3, Adobe Acrobat Pro version 7.

Expanded wireless service

Install the latest version of VPN software on your system and take advantage of the many wireless hotspots now available on campus.
