Overview
with Checklist
As a Haverford student, you have had access to numerous computing services, including your Haverford email account, the Storage server, and our anti-virus software. After graduation, you will lose access to files on Haverford owned computers and Haverford's anti-virus software. On or shortly after November 1, 2008, all your computing accounts will be deleted. This means that all your email, web pages, mail forwards, away messages, files on the Storage server, and other files you may have in your accounts will be deleted at that time.
Take action now to save important files on Haverford owned machines, to get new anti-virus software, and backup your important documents on Storage. After November 1st 2008, no data from your accounts will be recovered.
Files on
Haverford owned desktop or
laptop computers may be DELETED
AT ANY TIME FOLLOWING GRADUATION.
NOVEMBER
1, 2008--ALL COMPUTER ACCOUNTS
WILL BE DELETED. This includes
email, Blackboard, VPN, Storage,

| Email and other Haverford
computer accounts |
Email,
Blackboard, VPN, and other
Haverford computer accounts
will be deleted on or after
November 1, 2008.
You can
continue to use your Haverford
email account until
your account is deleted. However,
we recommend you begin transitioning
away from your current Haverford
email address now. See our
suggestions below for the Use
of Email After Graduation. |
Alumni Email Forwarding |
The Haverford Alumni Office
offers an alumni email
forwarding service.
This is not an email account,
but rather a mail forwarding
address you can keep for life.
Your forwarding addresses
will be "username@alum.haverford.edu",
where "username"
may differ from your current
Haverford email username.
The
alumni office will email you
details about this service.
Information is also available
at Haverford's alumni web site, http://my.haverford.edu. |
| Message
Center |
Until
your account is deleted on
or after November 1, 2008,
your mail will be filtered though
our email protection service,
MessageCenter--even
if you forward your email.
It
is a good practice to review
your quarantined messages regularly;
however, you don't have to
take action unless you want
to deliver a quarantined message
to your inbox. Your junk messages
will be automatically deleted
after two weeks. |
| Personal Web Pages |
Personal
web pages will be deleted
on or after November 1, 2008. Find a new site to host your personal web pages. |
| The Storage server |
Although Storage files will
be stored until November 1,
2008, you
must download
files on the Storage server
while still on campus. Only
those with off-campus VPN accounts
can access files
on the Storage server from off-campus. |
| Work done for faculty members or administrative
departments |
If you are storing work done
for Haverford faculty or staff
in your web space, Storage server
space, or other networked space,
please transfer it to the appropriate
owner. It will be deleted with
other files in your accounts
on or after November 1, 2008. Files
on Haverford owned desktop or
laptop computers may be deleted
at any time following graduation. |
| Files stored on other campus computers |
Files stored on miscellaneous
computers, such as those in the
public or departmental computing
labs, are may be deleted immediately
after graduation. |
| Anti-virus software |
Check with
your new Internet provider
for anti-virus software recommendations.
If your new provider has a
required or preferred product
you should use that to get
the best protection and support.
Our license agreement requires
you to
delete your McAfee anti-virus
software upon leaving the College.
If your new provider
does not offer an anti-virus
solution, you may be able to
use a free anti-virus package. Windows users can try "avast! 4 Home Edition" (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) or "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition" (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe). Macintosh users can try "ClamXAV for Macs" (http://www.clamxav.com/)
|
| Mailing Lists |
If you are on mailing lists,
remember to unsubscribe your
Haverford address and resubscribe
with your new address before
November 1, 2008. This will enable
you to continue receiving list
emails, and to post to member
only lists. If you have any questions
about how to unsubscribe or resubscribe
your list, contact the list administrator. |
Save
and Download Important Files Before
Graduation
Copy any files stored on Haverford's
computers onto your own hard drive
or disks. This includes files on
the student web server, the Storage
server, departmental computers, and
other computers around campus.
If you are storing work done for
Haverford faculty or staff in your
web space, Storage server space,
or other networked space, please
transfer it to the appropriate owner
before leaving campus.
Use
of Email After Graduation
Until November 1, 2008 you will
be able to access your Haverford
account. However, we recommend you
start transitioning away from your
Haverford account now.
Take advantage of the Alumni
Forwarding Service
The Haverford Alumni Office offers
an alumni email
forwarding service. This
is not an email account, but rather
a mail forwarding address you can
keep for life. Your forwarding
addresses will be "username@alum.haverford.edu",
where "username"
may differ from your current
Haverford email username.
You can set you alumni forwarding
address to your Haverford address,
and reset it when you begin using
a new email system. This allows
you to start giving out a new email
address before you even switch
to a new account.
The alumni office will email you
details about this service. Information
is also available at Haverford's
alumni web site, http://my.haverford.edu.
Get a New Email Provider
You can quickly get a free email
account from Yahoo, Google or Microsoft.
You may also use email provided
through your Internet service
provider (i.e. Verizon, Comcast).
You can set
a forward from your Haverford account to
your new email account, keeping
in mind this forward will expire
November 1, 2008. You can also
set your Alumni Forwarding Service
to this account.
Download
Desired WebMail or SquirrelMail Messages
If you wish to save email in your
WebMail or SquirrelMail account, you need to download
it from our mail server before
your account is deleted November
1. 2008.
SquirrelMail:
- Install
a desktop mail client,
if needed.
- Transfer any desired webmail
messages in folders back to your
inbox.
- Check email from your desktop client.
- You may be able to use you desktop mail client with your new email provider. Contact
your new mail provider with configuration
instructions.

Notify Others
of Your New Email Address
Whether you want to distribute
your new email address, or use
your alumni forwarding address,
it is important to notify everyone
how to reach you by email. Remember
to publish your new address on
your resume too!
Forward Haverford Email After
Graduation
You can
set
a forward from your Haverford
account to your new account.
This lets those who have not yet
learned this other address continue
to reach you. Keep
in mind this forward
will expire November 1,
2008.
If You Will Not Read Email After Graduation
If you are not planning to check your email after graduation, you
can disable your email account. However, if you do this,
you will no longer have access to any email sent to your Haverford account.
