End-of-Year Computing News For All Students

This web page provides important end-of-year computing information. Please read it carefully to avoid potential problems and to learn about services available now and throughout the summer.

Note to seniors: While most of the information below is intended for all students, some is primarily for returning students. See Class of 2008 Computing and Email Information to learn how long you can keep your Haverford accounts and what you need to do in order to save important files, maintain virus protection, and continue email and other Internet services after leaving Haverford.

Help Desk

The Computing Help Desk is open regular hours through Friday, May 16 -- Mondays 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM and Tuesdays to Fridays 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Any student computers left for repairs must be picked up by noon on Thursday, May 15. The student Help Desk closes for the summer at 5:00 PM on Friday, May 16.

Computing Lab Hours During Finals

During finals student computing labs have the following hours:

Magill Library, the KINSC Science Library, and the Roberts computing labs all provide both wireless and wired network access for your laptop. HCA 30 has wireless access only.

You need VPN software and a valid Haverford email address and password to gain network access from your laptop. After connecting, open a web browser and follow the instructions on-screen. For help accessing or using the network from your laptop, ask at the Circulation Desk in the libraries or the Help Desk.

All public computing labs will close promptly at noon on Friday, May 16.

Computing Lab Rules

In consideration for others, please take extra care to comply with lab rules during these busy times. The rules are as follows:

  • No food or drink
  • Only one printout at a time
  • Clean up after yourself
  • Clear all your belongings from your workstation when you leave, even if you plan to return later (you are welcome to use the cubicles in Roberts 9 for temporary storage)

Computer Security for the Summer

Please secure your computer for the summer.

  • Apply critical updates as needed. See Protect Your Computer for details.
  • Keep backups of all valuable document files, emails, and bookmarks.
  • In addition to saving final papers and other valuable work on a CD-R or USB flash drive, keep copies in your Storage server space.
  • NEVER open attachments or click on web links in messages unless you are expecting them.
  • NEVER click on links in AOL instant messenger buddy profiles.

For more details, see our security web site.

Networking for HCA Summer Residents

HCA summer residents may purchase a network connection. Fill out the form when you pick up your apartment keys in the HCA office.

Email During the Summer

Please continue to manage your email during the summer. Follow the instructions on our web page, Clean Your Server Inbox.

Use any of the following email management options:

Also, if you have not yet done so, enable your email client to use a secure connection when you collect your email.

Note to seniors: Transition now to your new email account. See our web page about account information for seniors.

MessageCenter Quarantine Reminder

Regardless of how you check email this summer, check your MessageCenter quarantine at least once every two weeks. Your mail will continue to be filtered though MessageCenter, our email protection service, even if you forward it to another account. Quarantined messages will be automatically deleted after two weeks, unless you deliver them to your inbox.

VPN Off-Campus Access to HC Only Networked Resources (i.e. Library Resources, Software, etc.)

Many library databases and other networked resources, including some software programs, are restricted to computers physically on the Haverford network and computers with off-campus VPN accounts. VPN allows your off-campus computer to be recognized as a part of the Haverford campus network. If you will need access to such resources this summer, you can apply for a VPN account now.

Starting this summer, you will also need a VPN account to edit your personal or student group web pages when off-campus. You will no longer be able to FTP to your web space on students.haverford.edu or www.haverford.edu unless you have VPN.

Note: If you are living in HCA this summer, you will not need a VPN account.

Summer Access to the Storage Server

If you have any files on the Storage server that you wish to access over the summer, copy them to another location such as your hard drive, USB flash drive, or CD-R disc. Unless you will be on-campus this summer, or have off-campus VPN access, you will not have access to personal files on the Storage server.

Note to seniors: Download your files on the Storage server now, before you leave campus! You will not have access to these files later. See our account information for seniors.

Wireless Network Access On Campus

Wireless networking is available in many locations across campus, including Magill Library, KINSC Science Library, KINSC Sharpless Commons, and Founders Green. You must install VPN software and provide a valid Haverford email address and password to use Haverford's wireless network.

Additional wireless information, instructions, and software are available on our web site.

Recommended Computers

The Academic Computing Center has recommended computer configurations for those who wish to purchase a new system. ACC only supports Macintosh and Dell computers. Both companies offer special discounts to Haverford students. Information about discounts on Dell computers, Macintosh computers, and Microsoft Office is on our web site in the Sales section.

Academic Computing has an arrangement with Journey Education Marketing that allows you to buy Microsoft Office Standard 2007 (for Windows) for about $75 and Microsoft Office Mac 2008 (for Macintosh) for about $80. However, as with Office 2007, those with older versions of Office may have difficulty reading files created via the new Office 2008 package. Watch for more information in the fall.

Computer Disposal and Recycling

If you want to get rid of an old computer, please see our web page on ACC's Computer Disposal Service. We offer discounted disposal rates through the end of the semester. In addition, the page links to information about recycling options.
