Fall Break Service Interruptions

Fall Break Service InterruptionsThe message below was originally sent to all Haverford community members on Tuesday, October 6th. To: All Haverford Community Members Campus-wide Network Service Interruptions During the maintenance window, we will be performing maintenance on the college’s secondary connection to the Internet. Our primary internet connection will not be impacted by this maintenance. All Haverford services (like the college website, email, VPN) will be available throughout the maintenance period through our primary Internet connection. Though all Haverford services will be available, users may experience some delays because, if they are using an external ISP that is using our secondary connection to pass traffic to Haverford, their ISP will have to update their records to send traffic to our primary connection while our secondary connection is unavailable. So, users may experience varying interruptions during the maintenance window – interruptions may be anywhere from unnoticeable to 30 minutes in length – while external ISPs redirect traffic. Campus Wireless Service Interruptions There will be a single ten minute interruption in wireless service in all campus buildings, while we upgrade hardware that supports the campus wireless network. During the service interruption, computers and network devices using wireless will be unable to access email, network connected printers, and the Internet. DNS and DHCP Maintenance During fall break, we will be upgrading our DNS and DHCP services. We do not anticipate that this maintenance will be user visible. The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service allows computers to join the campus network by sharing network configuration information, like IP addresses. The Domain Name Service (DNS) contains the database that matches the host names of services (ex. something.haverford.edu) with the IP address of the physical server, allowing users to use a name to reach a resource on our campus network.
