Install and Configure an IMAP Email Client -- General Instructions for Thunderbird, Mac Mail, Microsoft Outlook, etc.
Thunderbird is Haverford’s supported email
client for your computer. You can use it on its own or in combination with Haverford's web mail program, SquirrelMail.
There instructions explain how to configure a mail client with the IMAP protocol. We now recommend IMAP for most email users. However, we still support the POP protocol and have installation instructions for POP users who need them.
Install and configure Thunderbird, or another desktop client, as instructed below:
- Download and install your mail program. Thunderbird is available at www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
- Use the following
user name and server configuration settings:
Incoming Server Type: IMAP (with SSL)
Your name: Enter
your full name. (e.g. Jane
User)
Email Address:
username@haverford.edu (e.g.
juser@haverford.edu)
Incoming User Name: username
(e.g. juser)
Incoming Server Name (a.k.a. Mail server):
imap.haverford.edu
(with SSL: port 993)
Outgoing
Mail Server (a.k.a. SMTP server): smtp.haverford.edu

- Configure your mail program for IMAP with Secure Socket Layer (SSL). Configure Email
for New Security Measure (SSL) has configuration instructions for many popular mail clients.
- Configure other settings as desired. This might include configuring directory
services to easily find other
Haverford email addresses, setting up folders, or creating filters to help organize email.
- Once you start using your new mail client, be sure to keep your server/IMAP inbox clean!
