General Questions
How do I configure my email settings when I use VPN from off-campus?
If I do not use VPN, how do I configure my email to work with
my ISP?
- If you choose not to use VPN
from off-campus and still want
to send email through your own
broadband provider, you will need
to configure your mail client
settings as described in the document Configuring
Eudora Email When Off-campus.
Suggested settings for Verizon
and Comcast Cable broadband customers
are included in that document.
Can I set up multiple computers on my home network and still
use VPN from off-campus?
- Yes. To set
up multiple computers to connect
through your broadband provider
from off-campus requires a router.
However, some routers are incompatible
with our VPN software. The current
version of Cisco's VPN software
available from this web site supports Apple's Airport Basestation
and Basestation Extreme. Please
contact your computer support
liaison at Haverford for additional
information and suggestions.
Do I need to set up my off-campus computer with
my broadband provider before trying to use VPN?
- Yes. You must already have a broadband (DSL or cable
modem) connection before using VPN.
What equipment do I need in order to connect to the wireless
campus network?
- Your computer must have a wireless network card installed. Computer
manufacturers typically indicate this by saying their equipment is WiFi
enabled, or that they support 802.11b or 802.11g wireless networks.
On a Macintosh computer this is often referred to as an airport card.
Can I use any wireless receiver
to connect to the campus network?
- Probably. Any
wireless receiver supporting
the industry standard 802.11b
or 802.11g protocols should work.
However, in rare cases, we have
found wireless receivers which
had compatibility issues with the
computer upon which it was installed.
Windows PCs
Should I install the software I got from my ISP?
- Yes. The software
provided to you by your ISP is
not necessary for you to use their
broadband services and should not
interfere with our VPN software.
I followed the instructions for Windows XP, but the VPN connection
fails?
Macintosh
I have an
Intel Mac and VPN version 4.9.
I can connect to the Internet via
my Verizon DSL service, but get
an error when I try to start connect
to my hcvpn account.
- Unfortunately, our
Cisco VPN client (version 4.9)
for Intel Macintosh computers
is not compatible with the PPPoe
client needed to connect directly
through the modem Verizon provided
you. Until Cisco corrects this
problem, you can get around it
by purchasing a router, which
connects your computer to your
Verizon account without using
the computer's PPPoe client.
In addition to allowing access
to Haverford's campus-only network
via VPN from your Intel Macintosh,
a router allows several computers
to share your Verizon service
simultaneously from multiple
locations within your home.
If
you choose to purchase a router,
we recommend one that has both
wireless and 4 wired ports so
you can network all the devices
in your home, whether wired or
wireless, at the same time. The
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router
has worked well for many of our
users. As of November 2006 (when
this was written) you could purchase
it for less than $70 from most
area computer vendors, including
MicroCenter, Staples, Office
Depot and Circuit City, as well
as online.
Does VPN version 4.9 and
Intel Macs work on-campus with the Haverford wireless network.
- Yes. VPN use on campus
with wireless is not impacted.
Does VPN version 4.9 and Intel Macs
work with Comcast hi-speed internet?
- Yes. Comcast subscribers are not
impacted by this problem.
Is there
a way for me to access on-campus
resources on my Intel Mac without
using the Cisco VPN client version
4.9.
- As of February 2007,
VPN version 4.9 is required for
Intel Macs using VPN for some needs
(such as using Eudora with your
Haverford email account, and using
Keyserved software. However,
you may use a web based VPN client, https://vpn.haverford.edu to
access Haverford only web resources.
I have an Airport Extreme
BaseStation and OS X. My VPN
software says that the "remote
peer" is terminated and
I cannot get connected.
How do I set the VPN Client to select just my preferred profile?
- In the VPN Client window highlight the profile you want to make the
default and select Set As Default Connection Entry from the Connection Entries menu.
Can I Minimize the VPN Client Window After I Connect without
Causing the Connection to Terminate?
- Yes. If you
close the VPN Client window (the
red bullet), the connection will
disconnect, but you can minimize
it (the yellow bullet) and keep
the connection alive. If you want
to have the window automatically
minimized upon connection, click
the Minimize
on Connect box in the
VPN Client/Preferences menu.
I am using a Macintosh computer
with OS 9, which client do I use?
- VPN network support is only available
from Academic Computing for the
Macintosh OSX operating system.
We recommend upgrading to OSX if
you wish to use VPN.
