Dell and Apple Recall Battery on Many Laptop ComputersI. OVERVIEWIf you bought a laptop computer from Dell or Apple Computer, your system may have a recalled battery. Information about the Dell and Apple recalls is below. This web page explains how to obtain the replacement battery on your personal purchase (i.e. home or dorm computer). Faculty and staff who acquired laptops through Academic or Administrative Computing (i.e. office and departmental computers) should have received a separate notice on this issue. II. WHO IS AFFECTED?Those who made a personal purchase of one or more laptop computers during the following periods:

DELL RECALL INFORMATIONIf you have a Dell laptop follow the steps below: There has been a very serious battery recall on Dell laptop computers purchased between April 1st 2004 and July 18th 2006. If you purchased a laptop computer from Dell during this period, your laptop may contain one of the recalled batteries. We would like to ask you to please check the list of battery models below to determine if it is one of the ones included in this recall, below find a list of battery model's affected by this recall. To check your battery:
If you find you have a battery with one of the model numbers above please visit Dell's web site: http://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/ There you will find a form to fill out to obtain a replacement battery for your laptop. IV. APPLE RECALL INFORMATIONIf you have an Apple laptop follow the steps below: Apple Battery Exchange Program Models Affected: iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 If you purchased an apple laptop between October 2003 and August 2006 you may have one of the batteries that is subject to this recall. Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances. The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. Please use the chart below to identify the battery model and serial numbers that apply to your iBook or PowerBook. If the first 5 digits of your battery's 12-digit serial number fall within the noted ranges, please order a replacement battery immediately. To view the model and serial numbers
labeled on the bottom of the battery,
you must remove the battery from
the computer. Make sure the computer
is off! Depending on the model. slide
the battery release tabs, or use
a coin to turn the release latch.
The battery serial number is printed
in black or dark gray lettering beneath
a barcode.
