An analysis of the rise of the hard-boiled genre in contemporary Hispanic narrative and its contrast to classic detective fiction, as a context for understanding contemporary Spanish and Latin American culture. Discussion of pertinent theoretical implications and the social and political factors that contributed to the genre’s evolution and popularity. This course will be given in conjunction with Cities 229. Prerequisites: at least one 200-level course.
