The importance of symmetry in art, architecture, mathematics, and even history and religion has long been known. However, symmetries underlie some of the most profound discoveries in modern physics including the nature of space and time. This course introduces the non-scientist to symmetry and its role as a guiding and unifying principle in physics, from the observed patterns of complex structures in nature to the structure of the fundamental laws of nature.
