Courses: Mental Affliction: The Disease of Thought (ICPRH223A01)

Drawing on clinical case histories, illness memoirs, literary fiction, and essays in philosophy of mind, this course will explore how far the vehicle of language can transport us into turbulent mental landscapes without itself breaking down. The syllabus will feature selections from numerous authors such as John Barth, Samuel Beckett, Jorge Luis Borges, Robert Coover, Daniel Dennett, Julie Holland, Clarice Lispector, A.R. Luria, William Ian Miller, Thomas Nagel, Steven Pinker, Elyn Saks, Lawrence Shainberg, Lu Xun, and Adam Zeman.
Prerequisites: Freshman Writing (WRPR 100-level) or permission of instructor.
