Images of Mary Magdalene will serve as a lens through which to examine changing conceptions of gender, sin, sexuality, spirituality, the body, & salvation in Western culture. Sources include literary & artistic representations of Mary Magdalene from the New Testament & non-canonical gospels; post-New Testament legends, sermons, & stories about the Magdalene; artistic representations in medieval & Renaissance art; and images of Mary Magdalene in contemporary literature & film.
