Current topic description: What does a history of Big Brother look
like? What are the historical origins of state surveillance in
Europe? How and why has it changed over time? Ranging from the
medieval to the modern era, this course will attempt to answer these
questions by studying the production of social categories, medieval
and early modern inquisitions, the emergence of the police, the
invention of the passport, and surveillance regimes in modern
dictatorships and democracies.
