A seminar charting the emergence of American avant-garde film from the influences of European avant-garde filmmaking, particularly French Impressionism, Dada and Surrealism, to the literary Modernism of Gertrude Stein, Jorge Luis Borges, Ezra Pound, Charles Olson, Robert Creeley and Anas Nin. It provides an introduction to the aesthetics of avant-garde and experimental film as an alternative to mainstream film and to narrative film.
