Courses: Science&Morality in Modernity (PHILB102001)
Fall 2010
Class Number: 1777
Is knowledge based on reason or perception? Is belief in God incompatible with reason? What are the foundations of morality? These sorts of questions were first articulated in the modern period. We will consider answers to these questions as given by a range of modern philosophers that may include Descartes, Hume, Locke, Kant, Mill, Nietzsche, and Wollstonecraft. Our aim will be to understand these philosophersÂ’ responses to each other and to evaluate their arguments and thereby develop our own views.
