An in-depth exploration of the development of symbolic thought in
infancy and childhood. Examines major theories and empirical research
on topics including language development, gesture, graphic symbol
understanding, pretend play, understanding of and learning from video
images, literacy, and symbol use by non-human primates. Laboratory
component involves an original research project, designed, collected
and analyzed by the class members. Prerequisite: PSYC B206 or consent
of the instructor. Enrollment limited to 20 students, selected by
class and major. Priority will be for senior Psychology majors, other
seniors, junior Psychology majors, other juniors, etc.
