Courses: Topics in Political Philosophy: Topic for 2010: Just War Theory (PEACH361B01)

When is waging war justified? What moral restrictions apply to how war is waged? These questions about (a) when we may resort to war and (b) how we may conduct a war are the two main questions that Just War Theory addresses, and so they will be our overarching questions throughout this course. We will confront these questions somewhat indirectly, though, by focusing on important and pressing contemporary problems in the morality of warfare, including preventive war, terrorism, torture, âsupreme emergencyâ, humanitarian intervention and civilian immunity from bombing. Readings are drawn from contemporary sources in philosophy but also in political science and international relations.
