Courses: Introduction to Greek Literature: Herodotus and Greek Lyric (GREKH101A01)
Fall 2009
This course serves as both an intermediate language course and as an introduction to the study and appreciation of Greek literature and culture. Our focus this semester will be on HerodotusÂ’ account of Greek interaction with the Persians--which culminated in the long Persian Wars. Our readings will focus on the origins of Persia, the critical battles of Marathon, Thermopylae, the ultimate triumph of the Greeks. In addition we will read poems on related themes by select Greek lyric poets (e.g. Archilochus, Sappho, and Simonides). Special emphasis will be paid to increasing reading speed and fluency, in part through short composition exercises.
