Courses: History of the North American West (HISTH213B01)

Spring 2009

This course explores the history of the North American West from the pre-Columbian period to the present. Students will investigate several themes including cultural encounters between Europeans and Indians, industrial mining, desert reclamation, borderlands, dime novels, the Wild West show, World War II and the West, the western film, and modern environmental and social justice movements in the region. Overall, students will examine the contradictory themes of frontier and region that have come to define the history of the American West.
