This semester begins at the collapse of the young United States in
Civil War and the subsequent rebuilding of a new country. We will look
at the developing industrial and international power that will emerge
in the late nineteenth and twentieth century. Course emphasizes
social history as well as political developments and looks at the
powerful impact of race, class, and gender on the production of a
distinctly "American" ideology. Enrollment limited to 40 students.
