An overview of the history of modern French thought from
structuralism to the present. Focus on trends of recent French
thought engaged in questioning the status of the subject in the fields
of art, history, sociology, anthropology, sexual/gender politics.
Designed to provide a variety of critical perspectives for examining
artistic production, primarily in literature. Readings will include
Lévi-Strauss, Saussure, Barthes, Foucault, Bourdieu, Beauvoir, Wittig,
Sartre, Fanon, Lyotard, Lipovetsky, Rancière, Virilio, Gauchet, Nora,
as well as fictional works from Perrault, Diderot, Duras, Perec,
