Across the globe, the making of cities & urban communities is a highly divisive & contested process. Drawing on case studies from Africa, South America, and Asia, the course will address the most critical issues related to urbanization, including the creation of colonial and post-colonial cities, slums, and squatting, the meaning of urban citizenship, and the place of the cities of the South in the global economy.
