In this course, we will examine linkages between science and
colonialism in the East Asian context. In particular, we will
investigate whether theories based on Western colonizers are equally
appropriate for Qing and Japanese tactics of empire. Topics will
include: cosmology, race and ethnicity, industry, and military
technology. Cross listed with EAST B325.
