Courses: 'Outre-Occident': Regards francais et francophones sur les Etats-Unis d'Amerique (FRENH312B01)
Spring 2008
Cross-listed in Comparative Literature
Taking our cue from G. Duhamel who dubbed the American continent 'outre-occident', in this course we will study the representations of its dominant country in a few typical texts of the 20th and 21st Centuries--Baudrillard, de Beauvoir, Chraibi, Dadie, Godbout, Herge, Labro, Sartre, and Waberi. Why are these texts overwhelmingly negative & stereotypical? Understanding their historical contexts, their philosophical & even aesthetical underpinnings will help us to answer this important question.
