New Course: Beginning with a biological evolutionary model, we
examine a range of explanations for how and why new genres evolve.
Readings will consist of critical accounts of genre; three hybrid
novel forms will serve as imaginative test cases for these concepts.
Students will identify, compare, and write an exemplar of a genre that
