Fall 2007
An introduction to the classical theory of numbers. Topics include: primes and divisibility, congruences, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, quadratic reciprocity, sums of squares, Diophantine equations, continued fractions, approximation by rationals, Pell's equation. Time permitting, we will discuss arithmetic functions related tot the distribution of prime numbers. Emphasis will be placed on learning to generalize from examples to precise conjectures.
