Courses: Pirates and Travelers (HISTB212001)
Fall 2007
Class Number: 1316
New Course: In the early modern period, conquistadors, missionaries,
travelers, pirates, and natural historians wrote interesting texts in
which they tried to integrate the New World into their existing
frameworks of knowledge. This intellectual endeavor was an adjunct to
the physical conquest of American space, and provides a framework
though which we will explore the processes of imperial competition,
state formation, and indigenous and African resistance to colonialism.
Counts toward Environmental Studies Concentration.
