New Course: Through a close reading of ethnographic, historical, and
literary materials, this course will introduce students to some of the
key conceptual issues and regional distinctions that have emerged from
classic and contemporary studies of the cultures and societies of the
Middle East. The course will address the following themes:
orientalism; gender and patriarchy; democracy and state-formation;
political Islam; oil and Western dominance.
