The Philadelphia International Airport (www.phl.org) is located about 20 miles from Haverford. PHL is the 9th busiest airport in the world, and is the hub for US Airways. Southwest is rapidly expanding their PHL presence, and most major domestic carriers (including American, Delta, United, and Northwest) have regular flights in and out of the airport. International destinations include locations in Canada, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The Main Line

Haverford is located on the Main Line, which is another name for the western suburbs of Philadelphia along Lancaster Avenue (U.S. Route 30) and the former Pennsylvania Railroad Main Line. The Main line extends from the Philly city limits to northern Chester County and comprises an area of some 200 square miles. The Main Line was settled in the 1600s, when William Penn sold a tract of land (the Welsh Tract) to a group of Welsh Quakers for ten cents an acre.

The good people of the 8th Dimension believe that community service is not just something you do to bulk up your college applications — it’s an act central to a well-rounded education, and to a well-rounded life. The original Haverford curriculum had seven dimensions; community engagement and service, they believe, is the 8th dimension.

Like Baseball, But Different!

The ancient game of Cricket is Haverford’s oldest and most distinctive sport. To many Americans, it’s a mysterious game that looks kind of like baseball – to the rest of the world, it’s one of the most popular sports. Led for over 25 years by Coach Kamran Khan, Haverford’s XI team bears the distinction of being the only varsity cricket team in the U.S., but that doesn’t mean they sit around with no one to play. They play club teams from all over the country, and are frequent participants in cricket tournaments and festivals.

The Holy Grail of Rare Books

The first printing of William Shakespeare's complete plays of 1623 is known today as the "First Folio" and it might rightly be considered the Holy Grail of rare book collecting. Haverford owns a copy of the First Folio as well as each of the three subsequent printings of 1632, 1663-64, and 1685. In addition to the texts of the comedies, histories, and tragedies, the First Folio contains what many consider to be the most authentic engraved portrait of Shakespeare. Originally selling for £1, surviving copies of the First Folio have set record prices at auction in recent years. Haverford's four Folios were purchased at auction in 1946 by William Pyle Philips HC '02 and were donated in 1952 in memory of English professor Francis B. Gummere. Today the William Pyle Philips Collection of Rare Books contains over 100 humanist texts.

Play Ball!

Sports at a liberal arts college? Absolutely! Over 40% of Haverford students play a varsity sport, and another 10-15% participate in various club sports. There are 21 intercollegiate sports teams at the NCAA Division III level, and Haverford’s men's cross-country team is traditionally ranked in the top 10 of its division.
