- Summer stipends will be awarded to competitive proposals describing projects involving new directions in scholarship or curricular development. The first stipends will be available for the Summer of 2009. Requests should not exceed $10,000. Proposals that involve students will be viewed particularly favorably, and junior faculty are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Funds will be available to support travel to professional meetings and training workshops. These funds will be made available in consultation with the Provost’s office so that these funds complement, rather than overlap with, Provostial travel funds. Requests should not exceed $3,000.00.
Student Scholarship
- Student Summer Stipend: Summer stipends will be awarded to support external research and academically-oriented service projects. This program complements existing opportunities for summer research for students in faculty science labs at Haverford. Projects may include: (1) research in the labs of Haverford alumni who are interested in mentoring students; (2) both domestic and international research opportunities; (3) externships sponsored jointly with CPGC in areas such as public health, environmental studies, and science and society. Stipends will be determined according to College rates and protocols; the KINSC aims to fund up to 20 such positions annually.

- Student Travel Funding: Funds will be available to support travel to professional meetings and training workshops as part of a faculty travel plan or supported by a faculty mentor as an independent professional experience. Requests must be made in advance of travel, require sponsorship of a faculty member, and should not exceed $1,500.00. The KINSC will work jointly with the Provost's office to review applications and, in appropriate cases, may recommend that a grant be provided from the Louis Green Fund.

- Brian Kovaric Fund: This annual summer support fund has been established by the Kovaric family in memory of Brian (Haverford Chemistry ’05.) The fund will support one first year / rising sophomore as a summer research student in the natural sciences for a 10 week appointment. The student is required to present a poster at the end of the summer and to write a letter of thanks to the family (which can be sent through the Provost or Institutional Advancement). - Brian Kovaric Fund Page
Faculty/Student Domestic and International Projects.
Significant research projects that require sustained (3-5 years) collaborative work with domestic or international academic institutions and involve students will be supported. Such collaborative efforts may involve work in which the faculty and students will travel to another institution, either during the academic year or in the summer or winter breaks. Other models, involving more proximal labs, would enable students to periodically receive training and/or gain access to resources that enrich their senior thesis projects at Haverford. Given the cost of travel and lodging, this fund is meant to be a major grant involving requests up to $25,000.00 per year and may not exceed a total of $75,000.00 over the course of the project.
- Application: KINSC Travel Itinerary Form - NOTE: Form should be completed when funding has been granted
Symposia supporting Academic Innovation.
Funds for symposia covering topics in interdisciplinary areas such as environmental studies, public health, and science and society will be available. During the first budget cycle, these symposia will be developed by the Steering Committee, in conversation with the Hurford Humanities Center and the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship. In future years, the KINSC will solicit projects from the faculty and facilitate the administration and organization of these events.

The Mentoring And Student Teaching program is a long-standing outreach program supported by HHMI. The program provides laboratory experience and writing tutorials for 40-50 Philadelphia area high school and middle school students who come from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Haverford College students prepare the course curricula, devise and teach the scientific labs, and work one-on-one with high school and middle school students as tutors. Haverford College faculty act as advisers for this program.
Small Equipment grants.
As funding becomes available, the KINSC will support requests for research equipment. These grants will target equipment that falls in between the items that can be readily added to regular research grants ($500-$3,000) and the types of instrumentation that might require specialized instrument grant proposals ($50,000-$500,000). We anticipate that proposals for equipment in the range $1,000-$10,000 will be appropriate and encourage faculty to submit such proposals starting in the 2009-2010 academic year.
